  PINC.9 SPEAKER: SELMA EIKELENBOOM

“This is certainly a high point in our career,” exclaimed forensic specialist Richard Eikelenboom on January 20, following the release of Tim Masters, an American who was sentenced to lifelong imprisonment for a murder he didn’t commit. Masters’ acquittal after eight years in prison was brought about by new research at the forensic laboratory of Richard and Selma Eikelenboom. Months of meticulous research produced 400 DNA profiles from 60 traces found on the victim’s clothing. None of these belonged to Masters.

Selma Eikelenboom, a former coroner in Amsterdam, is a forensic medical specialist. She met her husband Richard, a biochemist, at a blood pattern analysis course. They both worked at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI). After 1 year at the NFI Selma decided to leave their employer together with Hannie van der Meij, a co-worker, and started their own laboratory Independent Forensic Services (IFS). Richard joined them in 2005. Since then IFS has resolved several important cases. In an Australian case, Selma Eikelenboom’s research led to a breakthrough by proving that an alleged murder victim wasn’t assaulted, but was probably run over by a car. This led to the acquittal of three men who had spent two years in prison of a life sentence.

Today, IFS is a respected and reliable laboratory for both defense and prosecution. What distinguishes the Eikelenbooms from the national forensic institute is the time they devote to thorough research. “By conducting solid, extensive research, combined with our experience and special expertise, we are able to find more and better traces.”
